Somatics-what it is and why it's useful

Updated: Nov 10, 2023

Somatic guidance is something I incorporate into every Intuitive Healing session. But, what really is it? Allow me to elaborate:-) Through my many years as a yoga teacher and energy healing practitioner nothing has stuck with me more than the truth of the integration of body/mind/spirit. It's not something I've just read in books, it's been imprinted from my own experiences over and over again. We are not our bodies…. but we have a precious, intelligent body that does its very best to care for us in every moment. In my work with clients overtime it became clear to me that many who sought my support had a history of complex childhood trauma. I was so grateful to be trusted by them and naturally knew how to hold space for their experience because of my own history, but I also knew something was missing.

Enter: Somatics. “Somatic” is simply a term that means relating to the body. When we experience trauma (defined not by the event but what happens in the body related to the event) our body attempts to help us through adaptive mechanisms. Essentially, a means of coping in the moment that allows us to survive the threat we are experiencing. This is an amazing gift our bodies give us for survival. The issue is, even when there is no longer a threat we can stay stuck in the adaptive response. Especially if the threat we experienced was chronic, we can stay in a trauma response of fight, flight, freezing, or fawning (people pleasing). Through relating to the body and holding space for what wants to be communicated, we can learn to relate to these tendencies with more compassion and/or release them over time. We can move towards more of a sense of freedom in our being that is no longer dictated by our survival response. That is pretty amazing. During guided somatic practice, a safe space if created for clients to connect more deeply to their own bodies through prompts and inquiry. The beautiful thing about combining somatic work and energy healing is that we can start from a more expansive place, and move towards the body when it feels OK to do so. From my own experience of living outside my body, it took years for me to feel safe energetically before I could really be present with sensations. It's OK to start where you are. As I've begun studying somatics over the past few years and incorporating more of it into my intuitive work, I've felt so inspired by the sense I get from clients of truly feeling understood. I'm so excited to continue this study and share its many gifts in combination with the powerful work of Theta Healing (intuitive, sub-conscious healing).
